At least 20 students from several boarding public schools in Potiskum, Yobe State, have been infected by a suspected outbreak of meningitis.

The affected schools include Government Science Technical College, Government Girls Science Technical College, and Federal Government Girls College in Potiskum, Fika, and Fune local government areas.

According to reports, most of the affected students were admitted to the Specialist Hospital in Potiskum, where they received treatment.

While some students are said to be responding positively to treatment, the outbreak has caused significant concern among authorities and residents in the affected areas.

Confirming the outbreak, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Muhammad Sani Idris, revealed that Governor Mai Mala Buni has directed the state Ministry of Education to temporarily relocate to Potiskum to address the situation.

The commissioner further stated that the suspected meningitis outbreak has claimed the lives of 20 students and that several others have been admitted to the Potiskum Specialist Hospital for medical care.

The tragic incident has prompted swift action from state authorities, with efforts underway to contain the outbreak and provide necessary medical support to affected students.

The situation remains under close monitoring as health officials work to prevent further spread of the disease and ensure the safety and well-being of students in Yobe State.
