Adebayo Adenrele

Pensioners in Ekiti State have dissociated themselves from an association formed by the former chairman of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), Ekiti Chapter, Joel Akinola under the aegis of Pensioners Association of Nigeria (PAN).

Recalled that Akinola on Tuesday, inaugurated PAN in Ado-Ekiti, citing alleged irregularities and constitutional breaches by the leadership of NUP caretaker chairman, Popoola Adetona, as reasons for the establishment of the parallel union.

Speaking with journalists in Ado-Ekiti, a cross section of the Pensioners who spoke through one of their leaders, Adeniyi Olugbenga said all the members of Local Government Pensioners Association of Nigeria, Primary School Teachers Pensioners Association of Nigeria, state and parastatals belong to NUP and would never join an illegal association.

Adeniyi described PAN as an association set up by unscrupulous elements vying for their selfish interest.

He called on Akinola and his loyalists to thread with caution and desist from tarnishing the image of NUP or risk facing the wrath of law.

The leader thereby urged members of NUP to remain calm and not to be distracted by the illegal activities of PAN, saying NUP remains the umbrella and the recognised body of pensioners across the country.
