The Federal Executive Council has imposed a 7-year ban on establishment of new federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

This is a part of the strategies to focus on the existing ones in making sure they deliver more quality and functional education before establishing news.

At the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, presided over by President Bola Tinubu, the government approved a seven-year moratorium on the creation of new federal tertiary institutions nationwide.

The Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa said the ban applies to universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, emphasizing that the decision stems from a pressing need to shift focus from expanding access to consolidating quality.

He explained that Nigeria’s education sector is grappling with the consequences of institutional duplication, which has strained infrastructure and depleted academic manpower.
