Family cries out, demands justice over death of Son at Lagos Hospital

Adebayo Adenrele

The Adeyemo family of Ikole Ekiti have called on the Lagos State Government to investigate the alleged medical negligence and unethical practices of one Doctor Yomi Adeyemo, which led to the death of their son, Abraham Akinsola Adeyemo, 67 at a private hospital in Lagos.

Addressing journalists in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, spokesperson for the family who is an health Educator and former State Health Educator with the Ekiti State Primary Health Care Development Agency, (EKSPHCDA), Dr. Beatrice Abimbola Adeyemi, recounted that the incident occurred on April 5, 2025 at Immangel Hospital, Baruwa Inside, Lagos.

According to her, the patient was placed on intravenous fluids and blood transfusion shortly after admission, without proper specialist’s assessment and medical history of the patient.

Adeyemi alleged that during the process, neither the doctor nor any health official stayed behind to monitor the patient as he was left to his fate in the bed.She explained that she demanded to speak with Doctor Yomi Adeyemo but he was said to have gone out and before he could return the patient was already gasping for breath perhaps due to the overload of the heart with blood transfusion and fluid.

She further alleged that the hospital also lacked basic emergency facilities, including an ambulance, forcing the Doctor Adeyemo to personally convey the critically ill patient to another private hospital in his private car and later to the Lagos State Teaching Hospital where the patient was rejected due to lack of space at the Intensive Care Unit, ICU.

According to her, the family rushed the patient to a Lagos State Teaching Hospital as a result of lack of funds but no Intensive Care Unit (ICU) space was available and the patient was returned to the private hospital where he died same day.

Following the incident, Adeyemi said she returned to Nigeria and engaged a medical-legal practitioner, Barrister Olaolu Osanyin at the cost of ₦2 million, in addition to nearly ₦10 million spent on burial arrangements.

The matter was reportedly taken to a regulatory body under the Lagos State Ministry of Health, where a meeting was held on July 1, 2025.

Adeyemi further accused Barrister Osanyin of professional misconduct, compromise, abandonment of the case, conflict of interest and attempts to pressure her into accepting a ₦2 million compensation offer from the hospital.

Surprisingly barrister Osanyin was the one that suggested 3 weeks adjournment during the meeting with the Ministry committee, but up till today he never returned to the ministry to give them feedback.

She said all efforts to get accountability from the lawyer through senior colleagues till date had yielded no response and he had stopped picking her calls.

Her words, “On 5 April 2025, while I was in New York, I received a call that my brother was sick and had been admitted to Immangel Hospital, Baruwa Lagos. I was told he had stomach pain, was placed on IV fluids, and was already receiving a blood transfusion.

“I immediately asked what led to the transfusion and who was monitoring it.Nobody on ground to answered as only the wife was there staying with him. He made several attempts to visit the toilet with the help of the wife holden the blood bag. I could not initially reach the doctor. When I eventually got his number, he confirmed that he set up the blood transfusion. I questioned why no one was monitoring my brother during the transfusion.

“Within 30 minutes, I received another call from my nephew informing me that his father had fallen into a coma. I contacted the doctor again and he was trying to resuscitate and placed him on oxygen. My brother was referred out, no ambulance the doctor personally transported him in his small car.

“They first took him to another private hospital where a demand of ₦5 million was made that same night, which the family could not immediately raise. He was then rushed to a Lagos State Teaching Hospital, but they said there was no space in the ICU. My brother was returned again to Immangel Hospital in a critical condition and died around 3:00 a.m. on 6 April 2025.

“After his death, due to banking and administrative issues, the family could not immediately settle the hospital bill. His account had a daily withdrawal limit of ₦100,000 and funds sent for payment were in that account.

“As a result, the hospital withheld his body from 3:00 a.m. until about 11:00 a.m. The children had to run around to borrow ₦500,000 before the body was released. There was serious tension and the son was almost assaulted before the corpse was finally released.

“I was deeply pained and returned to Nigeria. I decided to seek justice and engaged a medical legal lawyer at the cost of ₦2 million aside from nearly ₦10 million spent on burying my brother. The lawyer took the case to the appropriate medical oversight body and an appointment was fixed for 1st July, 2025.

“At that meeting, the doctor involved was indicted, with remarks that he should have referred the patient instead of commencing a blood transfusion without proper specialization. The doctor is not a cardiologist or hold any specialty relating to his condition.

“The matter was adjourned for three weeks, but up till 4 February 2026, nothing has been done. By August 2025, when I started asking for progress, the lawyer began avoiding me and appeared to be working for the hospital instead.

“A WhatsApp meeting was later held in September 2025 where the doctor agreed to pay ₦2 million compensation, which I rejected, questioning the basis for that amount and that meeting ended without resolution.

“Since September, I have repeatedly called the lawyer without response. I reported him to senior colleagues, but nothing has come of it. He even attempted to blackmail me, claiming I insulted him, which was a lie. I have all respectful conversations with him on my phone.

“What I want now is justice. I want the Lagos State Government to investigate Immangel Private Hospital Baruwa. I want appropriate sanctions because I believe the hospital’s actions led to my brother’s death and caused severe financial and emotional hardship”.

When contacted, Barrister Olaolu Osanyin said the case is still under investigation by the Lagos Government regulatory agency, saying “The matter is still under investigation by the Government regulatory Agency.

“The outcome is not out and it is not within anyone’s powers to determine the outcome of the investigation. It is only appropriate for us to wait for the outcome of investigation. I believe this is the right thing to do”.

However, when contacted Doctor Yomi Adeyemo who claimed to be the Operating Officer of the Immangel Hospital, he said he gave the deceased all the required care saying he took the man just like his biological father simply because they bear the name.
