…approves N935m for payment of gratuities




The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji has restated the commitment of his administration to regular payment of deductions to workers at the state and local government levels.

The Governor stated this on Monday during the 2023 MayDay celebration by the organised Labour Unions, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC in Ado-Ekiti, the State Capital.



Oyebanji, at the event themed: “Workers’ Rights & Socio-economic justice”, also added that his administration has approved N700,000,000 and N235,000,000 for the payment of gratuities to the state retirees and local government retirees.

According to him, “As your Governor, I commit myself under administration to regular payment of deductions by the special grace of God we are not going to fail you on this very critical issue as an administration.

“I wish to place on record that the Government has approved the sum of 700,000,000 for the payment of gratuities to the state retirees and another 235,000,000 for the local government retirees.

“Similarly, a sum of 4,180,81,726 was used to defray 2018 outstanding salaries to both states and local government workers.” He said

On his part, the Chairman of TUC, Ekiti State Chapter, Comrade Sola Adigun appealed to the Governor to take expedite actions to address the 7-month outstanding arrears meant for Pensioners in the state.

He also charged him to balance the salary disparity of the Health Workers in the Local Government with their counterparts in the state to make the people at the grassroots access adequate Medicare, among others.

He said, “We would make demand and ask for more and because of this, we like to state on the behalf of the pensioners whose arrears are said to be up to 7 months be looked into.

“There is an urgent need to balance the salary disparity of the health workers in the Local Government with their counterparts in the State to make the people at the grassroots access adequate Medicare.”

Also, the Chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ekiti State Council, Comrade Kolapo Joshua Olatunde also called for the reinstatement of 20 workers sacked in Ekiti State House of Assembly, adding that the scenario has continued to be an albatross into the organised labour despite pleas and agitations.

While calling on the workers to cooperate with the state government, the Governor in his response, assured the workers that all other outstanding issues will be addressed in due course.

“I am assuring you today that all other outstanding issues shall be addressed in due course.”
