A Pan Yoruba socio-econmic political group under the auspices of Afenifere, Ekiti State Chapter has called for compensation for June 12 Victims’ Families.
Afenifere made this call in a statement released at the end of its June monthly meeting and jointly signed by the Chairman, Secretary and Publicity Secretary of the group, Elder Yemi Alade, TLP Omoyemi and Chief Biodun Akin -Fasae respectively.
The statement continues, “The group, who joined the nation to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day on June 12, said the day serves as a reminder of the struggle for democracy in Nigeria and honours the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola.
“Afenifere Ekiti acknowledged the sacrifices made by Chief MKO Abiola in the fight for democracy in Nigeria and recognised the enduring impact of his legacy on the nation’s democratic journey.
“The Pan Yoruba socio-econmic political group, stands in solidarity with the Abiola family and the families of other victims of the struggle and calls for the provision of financial assistance to support them in overcoming the challenges brought about by the past injustices.
“Furthermore, Afenifere Ekiti supports the idea that the National Assembly shifts the handover of power date from May 29 to June 12 to align with the historical significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
“As we celebrate Democracy Day, Afenifere Ekiti State Chapter reiterates its commitment to upholding democratic principles, honouring those who have contributed to the advancement of democracy, and advocating for justice and equity in our society”.
