A popular Nigerian church, the United Methodist Church in Nigeria (UMCN), Abuja, has been shut down by the Nigeria Police Force after a conflict erupted over the church’s refusal to allow same-sex marriage.
In a video posted on social media, an activist known as Verydarkman claimed that the church’s headquarters in the United States had instructed the Nigerian branch to permit same-sex marriage, a directive opposed by both the Reverend and the church members.
The pastor responded by stating that he would rather rename the church to the Global Methodist Church in Nigeria than comply with the order.
In response, the headquarters threatened to force the pastor into compulsory retirement and appoint a new minister to take over the church.
The situation escalated when church members, upon hearing this, became violent and disrupted the church, prompting the Nigeria Police Force to shut it down to conduct a thorough investigation.
