A Customary Court of Appeal sitting in Ado-Ekiti has solicited media support in the administration and discharge of legal duties.
This call was made by Justice Oluwatoyin Abodunde, the pioneer president of the newly established legal body in Ado-Ekiti when she paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ekiti State Council today at the Union’s Head Office in Ado-Ekiti.
According to the Justice, the court has jurisdiction over grassroots cases, thus it will be responsible for addressing grassroots cases and consequently ease citizen’s overdependence on High Court and ensure easier and speedy access to justice.
As spelled out by the visiting Justice, the court will attend to cases ranging from divorce to chieftancy matters, land dispute, boundaries at local government level and other civil matters.
Speaking to the leadership of NUJ, she appealed to the Union to support the court for the task ahead.
In her words: “Aside the fact that we are neighbors, you are also critical to achieving success in my assignment.
“I’m the pioneer president of the court and I will be needing your cooperation and support.
“This court is mainly for grassroots, all cases held at customary courts at all local governments and communities will now come here.
“This court is critical to admitistration of Justice because we will be reducing the work load of the High court because we have jurisdiction in some matters ljust like the high court.”
Earlier, the President had expressed satisfaction in the ongoing infrastructural work at the court when she carried out an inspection exercise.
