Despite directives issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, that old notes be used as legal tender till December and Banks issuing same, some traders and other essential workers in the state have however refused to accept the old naira notes.

Residents in the State have called on the Government to look into the situation and find a lasting solution to the issue of the cash crunch.

Speaking with some of the residents, they lamented the hardship the refusal is causing them.

Pleading anonymity, one of them said, “This is really becoming frustrating. I got old naira notes from the bank, but the market women have refused to collect it saying they won’t collect it from them in the bank. I’m honestly tired.”

Another resident, identified as Ronke said, “After hustling for cash, I went to get fuel and this fuel attendant told me she won’t accept old notes, that I should transfer, and my network was bad. The Government should please help us. I might just report them so they can face the consequences of their refusal because I am tired already.

Recall that the government promised to punish those found rejecting the old naira notes.
