In a decisive move against medical quackery, the Ebonyi State government has closed down five fake hospitals, and arrested three distributors of fake drugs.
Governor Francis Nwifuru made these revelations while presenting the 2024 budget estimate, titled “Budget of Innovation and Success,” to the state House of Assembly.
Governor Nwifuru emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the health sector, highlighting the closure of quack centers such as Eleri Hospital in Afikpo, Party Hospital in Ugbodo, Homeopathic Specialist Hospital in Igbeagu, St. Patrick Hospital in Iboko, and Alexander Hospital in Umuezeoka.
Additionally, three major distributors of fake drugs have been arrested through collaboration with agencies like the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).
A notable achievement in the crackdown on medical quackery is the voluntary commitment of 107 individuals involved in such practices. They have signed undertakings with the task force on medical quackery, pledging not to engage in such unscrupulous activities in Ebonyi State.
Governor Nwifuru stressed the significance of upgrading the state’s 13 general hospitals, viewing it as a transformative effort to elevate healthcare services and accessibility for rural communities. He expressed a vision for Ebonyi State where every citizen, regardless of their location, can access world-class health services.
