….organises debate, quiz, essay for secondary schools students on GBV
… warns against any form of Gender Based Violence
More students in Ekiti State have been educated and equipped with knowledge about Gender Based Violence, the roles expected of them and the various measures to end it in the society.
The Justice Development and Peace Initiative, JDPI which facilitated the education programme, organized debate, quiz and Essay written competition among some secondary school students in Ekiti.
The exercise which was organized to commemorate this year’s International Day of Human Rights was an eye opener for the students.
Speaking during the programme held in Ado Ekiti, the Assistant Director, Ekiti, JDPI, Sister Agatha Ogbuagu urged Nigerians, especially children to always speak out, whenever their rights are being violated by reporting to appropriate quarters.
She urged students to approach JDPI to seek justice whenever their rights is trampled on or felt cheated to seek justice, saying such services would be render at no cost.
According to her, promotion of human rights will give room for sane and safe society as well as reduce decadence among younger generation.
The students were asked to speak on various GBV related topics so as to familiarize them with what GBV is all about and the way forward.
In the first debate, Oganganmodu High school, Ido Ekiti emerged overall best winner while Muslim College, Oke Ila Ado Ekiti bagged the second position.
In second debate, Petoa City college emerged winner, St Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School, Ikole Ekiti took second position while Mary Hill Secondary school, Ado Ekiti went home with third position.
In Essay writting, African Chuch Comprehensive, High School Ikere Ekiti emerged winner, St Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School,Ikole Ekiti bagged the second position while St Louis Grammar School,Ikere Ekiti came third.
In the quiz category, African Chuch Comprehensive School, Ikere Ekiti emerged winner as Ekiti State Government College, Ado Ekiti came second while third position went to Oganganmodu Grammar school, Ido Ekiti
In a separate interviews, some of the students of the schools that participated in the programme commended Ekiti JDPI for organising the event saying it had exposed them to some of the steps needed to be taken to protect their rights.
Thirteen secondary schools including St Louis Grammar School, Ikere Ekiti, Government College, Ado Ekiti, African Chuch comprehensive High school, Ikere Ekiti, St Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School Ikole Ekiti, Fountain International High School, Ado Ekiti, Are- Igbemo High School, Igbemo Ekiti, Muslim College Ado Ekiti, Petoa Group of School, Ado Ekiti , Mary-Hill secondary school, Ado Ekiti, Oganganmodu High School, Ido Ekiti participated in the quiz, Essay and the debate competitions.
At the programme a drama Titled “voice of the voiceles”was presented by St Theresa’s Catholic Secondary School, Ikole Ekiti to enlighten members of the public on the need to accord female children same opportunity like their male counterparts.
