The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council has supported the action of Governor of the State, Biodun Oyebanji, for cautioning filling stations and marketers in the state against hoarding of petroleum product, following the inaugural speech of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Governor urged marketers to await further directives by the Federal Government on the implementation of the planned subsidy removal and avoid actions that are capable of inflicting hardship on the citizens.
According to him, heavy sanctions await any filing station or marketer found hoarding petroleum product or involved in arbitrary increase in prices of petroleum product in the state.
NUJ, in a statement jointly singed by its Chairman and Secretary, Comrades Rotimi Ojomoyela and Kayode Babatuyi, said the action of the marketers shows that they only care about their personal gains, not minding the consequential effects on Nigerians and the development of the country.
The statement reads, “The union urges the leadership of the petroleum marketers to call their members to order and ask them to wait for further government directive on the matter.
“It also appeals to government to wield it’s big stick on erring marketers saying their actions if not checked may lead to another crisis”.
Meanwhile, Governor Oyebanji has invited the leadership of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to a meeting in his office by 4pm today.
Oyebanji further urged citizens of the state to go about their daily activities peacefully and avoid any rancorous situation.
