The Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (PDP) in 2023 general election, Peter Obi has expressed his displeasure over the closure of Abia Market after National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC’s crackdown on expired drugs warehouses.
NEWSTODAYNG gathered that two warehouses at No. 269, Sam Mbakwe Road (formerly Faulk’s Road), Aba, stocked with expired drugs, were uncovered.
During the raid, it was discovered that suspects had removed some cartons of expired but relabelled drugs before security reinforcements arrived.
From the warehouse at Umumeje, Umuocheala, Osisioma LGA, 140 tonnes of expired drugs were evacuated — excluding products seized from drug shops at Ariaria International Market.
Obi condemned the total closure of the entire market, saying it has further intensified people’s suffering.
His words, “It is unaccepted and that was what I told the president at that time, you can not close a market; you kill the entire system , people are already suffering”.
