Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has issued a compelling call to action, urging concerted efforts to eradicate this harmful practice.
This came in the wake of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Under the theme “Her Voice, Her Future: Investing in Survivors Led Movements to End Female Genital Mutilation,” Senator Tinubu emphasized the crucial role of protecting the rights and well-being of the girl child.
She urged parents, particularly mothers, traditional leaders, and community leaders in regions where FGM persists to consider the irreversible health consequences inflicted on young girls.
Acknowledging the progress made in Nigeria’s fight against FGM, Senator Tinubu underscored the need to confront the lingering practices that continue to endanger girls’ lives.
Despite the giant strides towards its eradication, the prevalence of FGM in certain areas remains a pressing concern, prompting a renewed call for action.
The first lady commended the efforts of all stakeholders involved in the fight against FGM, including First Ladies of States, Non-Governmental Organizations, Civil Society Organizations, and healthcare professionals.
Their collective voices and actions have been instrumental in raising awareness and driving change across the nation.
With a shared goal of eradicating FGM in Nigeria by 2030, Senator Tinubu called for unity and unwavering commitment from all sectors of society.
She also emphasized the importance of continued advocacy and action to protect girls from the harmful effects of FGM and ensure their right to a safe and healthy future.
She expressed gratitude and invoked blessings upon all those dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of Nigerian girls.
She reaffirmed her commitment to advancing efforts to end FGM and called on all Nigerians to join in this crucial endeavour.
