A gas plant in the Rumukurusi area of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, ignited in the early hours of Tuesday, triggering alarm among local residents and businesses.

It was gathered that the blaze, which endured for about four hours, prompted significant commotion in the vicinity.

Around 9 am, it was reported that the Federal Fire Service personnel actively engaged in firefighting efforts upon reaching the scene. Notably, a resident acknowledged the critical role played by the Shell fire service in suppressing the flames, expressing gratitude as the Federal Fire Service faced water shortage concerns.

The incident underscored concerns about the absence of nearby fire stations, raising questions about potential hazards.

Despite a notable police presence and diligent efforts by the fire service teams, apprehensions lingered regarding a potential explosion, leading to the cordoning of the area and restricting vehicular access.

Efforts to obtain a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

Meanwhile, investigations into the fire’s origin are anticipated to follow in the aftermath of the incident.
