The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council has called for the enactment of laws that would protect journalists in the state against harassment and intimidation.
The Chairman of the Union, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi made the request during a courtesy visit to the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ekiti State, Dayo Apata, SAN.
Babatuyi commended the Attorney General for the positive changes he has brought to the justice sector in Ekiti, noting that the ongoing efforts to produce the second edition of the Laws of Ekit State was as indication that the leadership of the Justice Ministry plans to make justice accessible to the people.
In his response, Dayo Apata, SAN solicited synergy with the State Council to promote the activities of the Ministry, particularly the Citizens Rights department.
Apata said the media must sensitize the citizenry so that they can exploit the various platforms provided by the Ministry to access justice and defend their rights.
The Attorney General who described the NUJ as a partner in progress, said the previous collaboration between the duo had been fruitful with citizens knowing more about the activities of the Ministry of Justice.
He explained that the partnership with the umbrella body for journalists was a good step considering the power of the media to reach out to a heterogenous audience at a time.
