The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has felicitated with its members across the state in commemoration of 2026 World Press Freedom Day.
This was contained in a statement personally signed by the Chairman of the council, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi.
Babatuyi stressed the vital role journalists play in safeguarding democracy, particularly as the state prepares for the June 20 gubernatorial election.

Babatuyi noted that while the annual observance celebrates press freedom, it also serves as a reminder of the responsibilities of governments and stakeholders to create an enabling environment for journalists to operate without fear or intimidation.
He emphasized that a free and independent press remains central to credible elections and good governance, calling for the protection of journalists before, during and after the election devoid of any form of harassment, assault or obstruction in the line of duty.
Babatuyi appealed to security agencies to remain professional and ensure that journalists carry out their responsibilities safely and without undue interference.
