The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a masquerade identified as Asoleke over the alleged killing of a 24-year-old man, Sefiu Kehinde, during a procession in the Labiran area of Ibadan.

This was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the spokesperson of the Command, DSP Ayanlade Oluseyi Olayinka.

According to him, the case was reported at the Mapo Divisional Police Headquarters on Sunday by a woman identified as Mrs. Aderemi.

“She reportedly told the police that at about 4:00 p.m. on the same day, she received a distress call from her elder sister informing her that the Asoleke masquerade and its followers, while parading through the Labiran area, allegedly attacked her younger brother, Sefiu Kehinde, with axes and cutlasses, inflicting severe injuries on different parts of his body.

“Following the report, the Divisional Police Officer of Mapo Division led a team of operatives to the scene, where the victim was rescued and rushed to hospital for treatment.

“However, doctors on duty confirmed Kehinde dead on arrival”.

The command said the Asoleke masquerade has been arrested, while four of his followers, who are alleged to have participated in the attack, remain at large.

The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

“The Oyo State Police Command remains committed to the protection of lives and property and will continue to take decisive action against all forms of criminality across the state,” the statement added.
