ADC Chieftain, Arokodare tasks Nigerians to reject APC’s prolonged economic hardship

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Yemi Arokodare, has urged Nigerians to hold the All Progressives Congress (APC) accountable for the prolonged economic hardship in the country by making their voices heard in the 2027 general election.

Arokodare, a former member of the House of Representatives, made the call while reacting to the debate over the Federal Government’s fuel subsidy policy, questioning why Nigerians had to endure prolonged economic suffering before the government began reconsidering aspects of the policy.

In a statement, he commended former Vice President and ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for drawing attention to the economic consequences of subsidy removal and advocating measures to address the difficulties confronting ordinary Nigerians.

The ADC chieftain said the policy had contributed to rising transportation costs, escalating food prices and increased living expenses, leaving many households struggling to meet their basic needs.

He added that businesses had also been affected by higher operating costs, while the purchasing power of many Nigerians had continued to come under pressure.

According to Arokodare, governments have a responsibility to prioritise citizens’ welfare when implementing policies with far-reaching economic consequences, arguing that adequate measures should have been introduced to cushion the effects of subsidy removal.

He maintained that any reconsideration of the policy must be accompanied by concrete measures capable of easing the financial burden on households and businesses, stressing that policy adjustments alone would not automatically reverse the economic difficulties Nigerians had already experienced.

Arokodare urged Nigerians to consider the economic consequences of government policies and hold political leaders accountable for their decisions, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general election.

He said the election would provide citizens with an opportunity to assess the records of political parties and their leaders, especially their handling of the economy, cost of living and policies affecting the livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians.

The former lawmaker further called on the Federal Government to prioritise economic relief, affordable living conditions and policies that protect livelihoods, insisting that Nigerians needed practical solutions to their financial difficulties rather than promises.

He reiterated his commendation of Atiku for raising concerns about the economic situation and advocating policies which, in his view, would better address the welfare of ordinary citizens.

Arokodare urged Nigerians to use the ballot box to express their views on the country’s economic direction and leadership in 2027, emphasising the need for greater accountability over policies that directly affect their daily lives.
