…praises Oyebanji for increasing allowance for journalists attached to Govt House
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has urged political parties in the state, including the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other political parties to prioritise merit in the selection of candidates for elections in order to ensure quality representation for the electorate.
The call was contained in a communiqué issued and signed by the Secretary of the Council, O’seun Ogunsakin, at the end of the April emergency congress of the union held in Ado‑Ekiti, the state capital.
The congress, presided over by the Chairman of the council, Kayode Babatuyi emphasised the need for political parties to put forward competent and credible candidates capable of delivering good governance and effective representation at all levels of government.
According to the NUJ, prioritising merit in the selection of candidates would enhance democratic governance and strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.
The congress also urged political parties to uphold the principles of the Beijing Affirmative Action by ensuring that women are given adequate opportunities to participate in politics and represent the people, rather than being relegated to the background.
Meanwhile, the union commended the Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, for approving the construction of an administrative block for the NUJ in the state.
The Union also praised the governor for approving an increase in the allowance for journalists attached to the Government House, noting that the gesture reflects his administration’s commitment to the welfare and professional well-being of journalists.
