Ekiti FRSC advocates provision of pedestrian, cyclist’s lanes to avert road crashes

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ekiti State Command has called on government at all levels to provide lanes for both pedestrians and cyclists at the initial stage of planning road construction to avert crashes.

This according to the command, would also encourage patronage among residents to embrace walking and cycling.

The Ekiti State Sector Commander, CC Sanya Adeoye made this appeal on Monday at the headquarters of the command, in commemoration of the 2025 United Nations Global Road Safety Week Annual Annual Event.

The one-week long event tagged: “Streets for Safe, Make Walking Safe, Make Cycling Safe”, aimed at sensitising teeming road users on the need to give adequate consideration to non-motorised road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.

Adeoye emphasized that the state has recorded minimal cases of road crashes since his assumption into office, while also promising adequate protection of the fundamental human rights.

His words, “Going by the theme, adequate sensitization shall be given to the teeming road users on the need to give adequate consideration to non-motorized road users which includes pedestrians that walk from a point to another and the cyclists their inalienable right of way and protection by the motorized road users.

“Let me emphasis here that safety is a collective responsibility hence need for us all to view and take it as a personal concern by tolerating level of safety consciousness of our fellow road users and adjust positively so as to mitigate possible crash.

“Going medically, walking is recommended as one of the best exercise one could do to enjoy good and sound health. In line with this medical expert recommends for at least 30 minutes walk in a day to enjoy good palpitations, stress neutralizing and aiding burning of calories to have a lighter body.

“Let me specifically by this brief appeal to Government at all levels to ensure that provision is adequately provided to accommodate both the pedestrian and cyclists at the initial stage of planning road construction to guarantee safety and thereby encouraging more patronage in the less cost saving mission of walking and cycling”.

In another development, the Command also paid a courtesy visit to the palace of the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe for his support and royal blessings.

In his response, Oba Aladejugbe pledged his support to the command, while also advising its leadership to prioritise and protect the rights of the citizens.
