The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation in the country, calling on both the Federal and State Governments to urgently adopt lasting measures to curb rising cases of banditry, terrorism and other violent crimes threatening national peace and development.
The union made the call in a communiqué issued at the end of its May Congress held in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital.
In the communiqué signed by the Secretary of the council, O’Seun Ogunsakin, the Congress noted that insecurity had continued to escalate across different parts of the country, posing serious threats to lives, property and socio-economic development.
According to the communiqué, the persistent attacks by bandits and other criminal elements had heightened fear among citizens and weakened public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.
The union therefore urged governments at all levels to intensify efforts toward finding sustainable and practical solutions to the security challenges confronting the country.
The communiqué read, “After extensive deliberations on issues of national and state importance, the union resolved as follows:
“That the Federal and State Governments should urgently intensify efforts toward finding lasting and sustainable solutions to the growing spate of insecurity across the country. Congress noted that banditry, terrorism, and other forms of criminality are becoming threat to peace and development of the country.
“That residents should remain vigilant and security conscious within their communities and promptly report suspicious activities, unfamiliar movements, or strange individuals to relevant security agencies for appropriate action.
“That residents of Ekiti State and members of the public should desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse and waste materials on waterways, especially as rainfall increases. Such practices contribute significantly to flooding and pose serious risks to lives and public infrastructure.
“Ahead of the forthcoming Ekiti election scheduled for June 20, the NUJ calls on eligible citizens to urgently obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in the democratic process by voting for candidates of their choice.”Congress restate commitment to engage all Governorship candidates ahead of the election”.
