The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ekiti State Council has activated a situation room ahead of Saturday’s governorship election to monitor safety of journalists and counter the spread of misinformation.
According to a statement signed by the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Kayode Babatuyi, the situation room is domiciled at the NUJ Secretariat in Ado-Ekiti.
It will serve as a rapid-response centre for journalists covering the polls, tracking incidents of harassment, intimidation, or fake news.
Babatuyi said the initiative became necessary as fake news and disinformation have become potent tools to manipulate voters and inflame tensions during elections.
He noted that the room will work with fact-checking partners and media stakeholders to verify viral claims, correct false narratives in real time, and provide journalists with verified information for accurate reporting.
