Residents of Akinakeju community in Ekiti State have commended the state government for its prompt intervention following a devastating flood that ravaged the community on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

This was contained in a statement signed and made available to journalists on behalf of the community by Chief Folu Oni.

The community expressed appreciation to Governor Biodun Oyebanji and relevant government agencies for their swift response to the disaster, which reportedly resulted in significant damage to property and hardship for residents.

The community also acknowledged the officials of the Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), the State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) and the State Waste Management Agency for responding promptly to the incident and assessing the extent of the damage caused by the flood.

According to the community, the timely intervention demonstrated the government’s concern for the safety and welfare of residents, particularly at a time when many families were grappling with the consequences of the disaster.

However, the community stressed the need for urgent and permanent measures to address the recurring flooding, harping that expansion and channelisation of the canal in front of the community as promised by the government should be given priority to prevent a recurrence of the flooding.

The residents consequently appealed to Governor Oyebanji to approve the project without delay and facilitate the release of funds required for its execution.

The statement reads, “On behalf of the residents and entire community of Akinakeju, we wish to sincerely commend His Excellency, the Governor of Ekiti State, and the relevant agencies of the State Government for their prompt intervention following the devastating flooding that affected our community yesterday 27th of August,2026

“We therefore appeal to His Excellency, the Governor, to kindly give immediate approval and facilitate the release of funds for the project, in fulfilment of the assurance given to the community.
