The Senate President of the 10th National Assembly, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has revealed that he gave a sum of N200 million naira to the immediate former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, in 2015 when he was running for governorship.

Akpabio made this clarification to reciprocate Wike’s claim of getting help from him, noting that he gave the former governor help from his own resources as the manager of the telecommunications sector and not from the Akwa-Ibom government.

However, he lauded Wike for his numerous accomplishments in his state, adding that the 10th National Assembly is thrilled to welcome him as an honorary member.

According to him, “Your Excellency, the recently-departed governor of Rivers State, you indicated in the church that the then Governor Godswill Akpabio aided you with some money when you were campaigning; that money came from my savings in the telecom industry.

“The funding did not come from the Akwa-Ibom State government. You claimed that I helped you when you were seeking the office of governor of Rivers State in 2014 or thereabouts; the funds came from savings I had made while working as a managing director in the telecom sector.

“I thought I should amend that since it wasn’t from the Akwa-Ibom State administration. On that money, I paid tax in Lagos.”
