The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Rotimi Ojomoyela, Ekiti State council, has indicated the readiness of the Union to partner with Gender Mobile Initiative (GMI) in ending female gender mutilation in the State.

Ojomoyela said this while playing host to the GMI team who were in his office for a courtesy visit at the NUJ Press Center on Wednesday, 20th September 2023.

Gender Mobile Initiative, a youth and female-led organization that leverages technology and community-based interventions to advance gender equality and combat gender-based violence.

Rotimi maintained that a sustained campaign and advocacy measure be employed to preach against female genital mutilation.

He also stressed on the need for special training of members of the Union on how to best relate the message to the people so as not to sound immoral or provocative.

“NUJ Ekiti Council stands against FGM” he declared.

Also speaking on the issue, the state Leader for Gender Mobile Initiative(GMI) Omotunde Blessing, said Ekiti State has maintained the highest Female Genital Mutilation(FGM) prevalence rate of 50% in south West Nigeria.

As a means to end Female genital mutilation, Blessing therefore solicited support of the NUJ for a wide spread of Campaign against FGM via the various media outlets in Ekiti State.
