Nollywood Icon Genevieve Nnaji’s film, “I Do Not Come To You By Chance,” is set to grace the screens at the ongoing Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF).
The film, an adaptation of Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani’s acclaimed debut novel, revolves around the challenges faced by Kingsley, a first-born son, striving to provide for his family amid his father’s failing health.
The narrative unfolds as Kingsley, despite possessing intellect, finds himself struggling in the Nigerian job market. In a twist of fate, he takes a job with his notorious uncle, Cash Daddy, a mastermind behind numerous email scams. As Kingsley becomes entangled in his uncle’s world, he discovers his own talent for the art of the confidence trick.
Returning to the movie scene as an executive producer, Genevieve Nnaji, alongside Chinny Carter, brings this captivating story to life. The film, told in both English and Igbo, is directed by Ishaya Bako, with Femi Awojide serving as the Director of Photography. The cast includes Blossom Chukwujekwu, newcomer Paul Nnadiekwe, Jennifer Eliogu, Sambasa Nberibe, and Beverly Osu.
Describing the movie as a “universal story of family, ambition, and greed,” the director emphasizes its exploration of confidence scams that have evolved over the years. “I Do Not Come To You By Chance” made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) as part of the Centrepiece program and is set to grace the AFRIFF screens, promising a nuanced reflection of Nigerian literature and film.
