A recent commentary on the divergent reactions to women’s social media posts in Southern and Northern Nigeria has stirred debates on cultural norms and morality.

A Social media activist, Reno Omokri in a post tagged #TableShaker on his X handle, (formerly twitter) went futher to analyse the debate between morality and culture.

According to his observations, Southern Nigerian men are likely to praise and promote a woman dressing sexily on social media, while their Northern counterparts would discipline and disgrace her.

The commentary argues that the Northern society actively protects its moral fabric and doesn’t rely on Western media standards. It contends that the Southern part of the country, despite being materially wealthier, is morally poorer, thereby raising concerns about paternity fraud in Southern Nigeria, highlighting the high levels observed and linking them to the cultural acceptance of casual sex.

The commentary suggests that the Northern region, with its emphasis on morality, provides more freedom in property rights for women. It contrasts this with the perceived lack of property rights for women in the South, arguing for a revisitation of the concept of civilization.
