Tragedy struck in Borno as at least six children lost their lives when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded near a Qur’anic school in Gubio Local Government Area.
The explosion, which occurred around 2 p.m., resulted in the tragic deaths of the young pupils.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication specializing in the Lake Chad region, reported that the explosion was triggered when an undetonated IED, collected among scraps, detonated within a building used by a metal scavenger.
Unfortunately, the proximity of the blast to the Qur’anic school led to the untimely demise of six children who were in the vicinity at the time.
NEWSTODAYNG gathered that, the scavengers alleged not to know that the IED was among the metals collected as it claimed the lives of the children and caused severe bodily harm.
Recalled that Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno had earlier banned the activities in all LGAs of the state in 2023.
The governor, recognizing the perilous consequences, stated that metal scavenging had resulted in the deaths of thousands of citizens in the state.
