The Ekiti State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has advised residents of Ekiti to remain calm and take necessary precautions following predictions of thunderstorms in several states of the country, including parts of Ekiti, by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

This was contained in a statement signed by the State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Erelu Tosin Ajisafe Aluko, and made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti.

The statement emphasized that thunderstorms are localized weather events caused by intense heating of near-ground air, leading it to rise and form cumulus clouds. These clouds accumulate electrical charges, ultimately resulting in lightning and thunder.

While the Ministry acknowledged the potential dangers associated with thunderstorms, the statement emphasized the importance of avoiding panic.

The Ministry urged residents to remain calm and take necessary precautions, as outlined below, to minimize any potential risks associated with the predicted thunderstorms.

Some Precautionary Measures were Recommended by the Ministry to include;

Seeking Shelter Indoors: Stay indoors and wait for the storm to pass before venturing outside.

The Ministry also cautioned residents to minimize electrical hazards: Turn off and unplug electrical appliances to avoid damage from power surges.

Maintain distance from windows and reflective surfaces: Stay away from windows and avoid using mirrors or other reflective objects.

Avoid open flames and gas: Do not light gas appliances or use open flames during a thunderstorm

Maintain a safe posture: Avoid lying flat on the ground.

Stay away from conductors: Keep a safe distance from electric wires, poles, and other conductors.
Limit cell phone use: Avoid using your phone during a thunderstorm, as metal can attract lightning.

The statement further assured the residents that if the above suggestions are followed religiously, Ekiti stands a chance of recording little or no casualties as predicted by Nimet.
