Nigerian comedian and actor Isaac Olayiwola, widely known as Layi Wasabi, recently made headlines by revealing his unconventional views on romantic relationships.

During an appearance on the ’90s Baby’ podcast, the AMVCA-winning entertainer stated that he does not believe in the concept of a “girlfriend,” preferring the term “partnership” instead.

In the same interview, Layi Wasabi also recounted his strict upbringing, detailing how his uncles disciplined him physically for academic failures. “I had uncles that flogged me. I had one that traveled to flog me. He traveled for two hours from Ibadan to Oshogbo to flog me,” he shared.

Despite excelling in biology and chemistry, his poor performance in physics and mathematics led to severe repercussions. “At the time, I passed biology and chemistry but failed physics. I had stronger subjects in the art department, so it was recommended that I did art. My mum was upset I wasn’t taking school seriously. She called one of my uncles, he said, ‘Don’t worry I’ll be in Oshogbo tomorrow.

“I was the one that opened the gate for him, assisted him to carry his luggage from his car. He sat down, drank water, and said, ‘Bring your report card.’ He went through all the courses and said, ‘You failed physics, you didn’t do well in mathematics. Lie down there.’ And I knew what my fate was then.”
