Following disastrous start, Bundesliga giant, Borussia Dortmund have sacked head coach Nuri Sahin on Wednesday.
The decision comes in the wake of a stunning 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League on Tuesday, marking their fourth consecutive loss across all competitions.
“Following an in-depth analysis of our recent performances, Borussia Dortmund has decided to relieve head coach Nuri Sahin of his duties with immediate effect,” read an official club statement.
Last season’s Champions League runners-up, Dortmund, took an early lead in Italy but capitulated in the second half, conceding twice in two minutes.
Domestically, their woes continue, with three consecutive Bundesliga defeats in 2025 leaving them languishing in 10th place and jeopardizing their hopes of European qualification.
Lars Ricken, the club’s managing director, in his comment said: “With just one win in our last nine matches and a series of disappointing results, we’ve lost confidence in our ability to meet this season’s objectives under the current setup. This decision was painful on a personal level but necessary following the game in Bologna.”
Sahin, 36, had been in charge for just over six months, having replaced Edin Terzic in the summer of 2024. A former Dortmund player and youth product, Sahin joined the coaching staff in 2024 after managing Turkey’s Antalyaspor for two years.
He had been under contract until 2027. The club has yet to announce who will lead the team in their upcoming Bundesliga clash against Werder Bremen.
