In a shocking turn of events, the Ogun State Police Command has apprehended Esther Hamidu, a credit officer at a microfinance bank, for her alleged embezzlement of customers’ contributions amounting to N1.97 million.
NEWSTODAYNG gathered that, the disappearance of these funds, spanning from March to December 2022, was brought to light by a vigilant branch manager in Abeokuta, the state capital, who promptly reported the incident to the authorities.
Despite the police’s persistent efforts to track her down and recover the misappropriated funds, Hamidu managed to escape.
Nevertheless, an unnamed source within the state police command revealed that the fugitive has now been detained.
Confirming her capture, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed that Hamidu was apprehended in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, on Friday.
Odutola stated, “Yes, she has been arrested. She has been transferred from Ibadan, where she was arrested, to Ogun State. She has confessed to the crime but could not provide an explanation for her actions.”
This incident has sent shockwaves through the local financial community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and oversight in the banking sector.
