…as Registrar urges discipline, morality

Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji of Ekiti State has called on the 2022/23 matriculating students of International Institute of Journalism, IIJ, Ado-Ekiti Campus to be innovative and professional.

Oyebanji, ably represented by his special adviser on media, Yinka Oyebode, stated this on Tuesday during the 2022/23 matriculation ceremony of the institution, adding that they are the trends in the labour market.

In his words, “I admonish you student to be innovative and professional in your duties; be a solution provider, this is what employer needs at the moment. Also know recent trend in your profession so as to be updated.

“I will say management should be innovative too, this is not a period you teach them traditional media alone, ensure online and social management is included in your curriculum; if not included yet” he said

While enjoining the students to embrace courage to overcome the challenges ahead, the Registrar of the Institution, Olusola Afolabi, represented by former Nigeria Union of Journalist (NUJ) president Ekiti state chapter, Akogun Tai Oguntayo also advised the students to be disciplined and demonstrate high level of morality during the course of their program.

“Here, we teach moral and discipline, so we expect you to abide with it. Choosing this way (Journalism practice) is not a mistake. You may experience difficulty along the way but don’t be discourage by that.”

Also speaking during the event, the NUJ National President, Chris Isiguzo represented by the ‘B’ Zone vice chairman, Mrs Aderonke Samo, acknowledged the contribution of the institution not only in Ekiti state but in Nigeria in general in the field of journalism, thus, appeal to the students to be part of the development.

“This institutions has contributed a lot to Journalism in Ekiti and beyond, we have people who only qualification the have is what they got here, and they are doing fine; this is to tell you we are not playing here.

“Though you may encounter some challenges along the way, but I can assure you it worth it worth it. It is through my certificate I got here that made the first female council secretary of NUJ Ondo/Ekiti chapter, also made me the first ever female vice president of the Union. Am telling you this so you can be serious” she said

The Chairman of NUJ, Ekiti state council, Comrade Rotimi Ojomoyela pleaded with the students to pay their school fees before exams, as it is necessary to keep the institution running.
