An Akure Magistrate’s Court has remanded a 23-year-old man, Vincent Awonugba in a correctional centre for killing his 68-year-old grandmother, Florence Olaoye, in Labata Orimolade, Ondo, the headquarters of Ondo West Local Government Area, in Ondo State.
The accused was arrested by the police on August 6, 2022, for allegedly murdering the victim on the same date at her residence.
According to the prosecution, Abdulateef Suliaman, the defendant, stabbed the victim on her neck after a dispute over his late-night movements.
The defendant was arraigned on one count of murder and said to have violated Sections 316 and 319 of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1 Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
Suliaman also requested that the defendant be held in custody pending legal counsel from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Awonugba, whose plea was not taken, appeared in court without legal representation.
The defendant, during an interrogation, claimed to be innocent of the crime, as he stressed that neighbours intentionally linked him to his grandmother’s death because they knew they were always at loggerheads.
The Magistrate, Tope Aladejana, in his ruling remanded the defendant at the Olokuta Correctional Centre pending advice from the DPP.
To this end, the case is adjourned till September 27, 2022, for further mention.
