Migration has been a thorn in the flesh of the development of Nigeria from time immemorial, as Citizens flee the country to seek greener pastures on foreign lands.
The Executive Secretary of Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Employers’ Federation (CANMPEF), Mr Femi Oke has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to enforce a comprehensive policy that would address the hardships experienced by Migrants.
The Executive Secretary made this call during his lecture at the “27th Annual National Management and Industrial Relations Seminar”, in affiliation with Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and Industrial Global Union (IGU), held in Akure, the state capital of Ondo State.
At the 3-day seminar themed “Emerging market Trends in the Labour World: Issues and Implications for them Nigerian Workers”, he noted that the Federal Government has failed to enforce any policy that would address the challenges faced by Migrants which include high levels of poverty, vulnerability and restrictions relating to access to work, the spread of child labour, among others.
According to him, “So far, there has not been a comprehensive policy in these countries to adequately address the challenges faced by migrants, including: vulnerability and restrictions relating to access to work, work in the informal economy, the spread of child labour, high levels of poverty and low purchasing power, limited access to social protection systems, and high levels of unemployment.
“Broadly speaking, there are four main drivers of migration which are economic, social, political, an environmental migration.
“Economic migrants move to find work, social migrants relocate in search of a better quality of life, political migrants leave their home countries to escape political persecution or conflict, and environmental migrants move in order to escape natural disasters.”
Earlier, the National President of Chemical and Non-Metallic Products Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (CANMPSSAN), Comrade Segun Samson David berated the policies of the Federal Government threatening the survival of workers and businesses in the Country.
He accused the Federal Government of sponsoring about 17 bills at the National Assembly, targeted at forcing more levies on the private sectors with negative consequences on workers and businesses in the country.
He furthered that the sponsored bills have become major threats, instigating phenomena like insecurity, erratic power supply, multiple taxation, hike in production costs, access to financing, among others.
In his words: “The federal government choking policies are going to push manufacturing companies and other business out of existence.
“The government is sponsoring no fewer than 17 bills at the National assembly, aimed at imposing more levies on the private sectors with negative implications on business sustainability.
“Going further, rise in production costs, epileptic power supply, insecurity, access to financing, multiple taxation are other variables compounding the woes of business in Nigeria.”
He thereby enjoined all Nigerian workers to cast their votes for the Candidate who has their interests at heart, come 2023 General elections.
