In a shocking turn of events, an explosion has hit the Rivers State House of Assembly complex on Sunday night, casting a shadow over the ongoing political struggle in the state.
NEWSTODAYNG gathered that, the incident occurred around 9:25 pm when unidentified arsonists allegedly threw an explosive device into the assembly building, resulting in a fire.
A senior police officer, who craved anoymity, confirmed the occurrence.
He revealed that the fire was quickly extinguished by firefighters who arrived at the scene in the nick of time, preventing more extensive damage, “I think it has to do with politics.” He added
It was alleged that the motive behind the explosion appeared to be linked to the ongoing political struggle in the state that certain lawmakers were in the process of orchestrating the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
To clear the path for Fubara’s removal, a plan had been set in motion to first impeach the House leader, Eddison Ehie, who had been blocking efforts aimed at ousting the governor.
Visiting the Assembly, NEWSTODAYNG noted a heightened security presence with about 17 security trucks and an Armoured Personnel Carrier stationed at the entrance and its surroundings.
This incident raises concerns about the volatile political climate in Rivers State, as lawmakers grapple with the contentious issue of Governor Fubara’s potential impeachment.
