The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has directed the demolition of approximately 200 houses in the Nuwalege community, close to the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport in Abuja, following a request from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).
NEWSTODAYNG gathered that the purpose of the demolition is to make room for the expansion of the Presidential Fleet.
Mukhtar Galadima, the Director of the Department of Development Control, revealed this during a community and citizens’ engagement session in Nuwalege.
He explained that the Nigerian Air Force approached the FCTA with the request, and in response, the FCTA took the responsibility to handle the matter.
Galadima clarified that the engagement with the community was essential to inform them of the intention and discuss the impending demolition.
He mentioned that approximately 150 to 200 houses, along with attached commercial stores, would be affected.
Regarding compensation, Galadima emphasized the need for further investigations to ensure that compensations, if any, were paid appropriately.
According to him, the FCTA plans to collaborate with the Nigerian Air Force and the Department of Resettlement and Compensation to verify compensation details and ascertain the claims regarding the number of structures and people affected by the expansion project.
