The Federal Government has disclosed plans to implement a groundbreaking wage system in the civil service that will be based on employee productivity.

Dr. Nasir Raji-Mustapha, the Director-General of the National Productivity Centre (NPC), revealed this initiative during an enlightenment session in Abuja, where he discussed the agency’s mission and mandate.

Dr. Raji-Mustapha outlined that the proposed wage system aims to reward workers based on their productivity levels, regardless of their grade level. This means that employees on the same level could potentially earn different salaries under this new framework. The decision, he emphasized, is driven by the recognition of productivity as a crucial factor in the nation’s economic growth.

“We are in the process of developing a productivity-led wage system that will ensure that those who are productive are rewarded for their efforts irrespective of their grade level. Under the proposed system, employees on the same salary scale can earn different wages,” he stated.

Addressing concerns about stakeholder involvement, particularly from organized labor, Dr. Raji-Mustapha assured that the proposal takes into account the input of critical stakeholders. He emphasized the importance of engaging with labor unions in shaping such policies, highlighting their role as recipients of the outcomes.

“Labour as a critical stakeholder is being carried along in this exercise. As researchers, we don’t just do things without considering the recipient of the reports,” he affirmed.
