The Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Fasina, has called on the government to consider raising the salaries of Lecturers in Nigerian Universities.

In a recent interview, he emphasized that a professor’s monthly earnings should not be less than N1 million.

This statement comes amid ongoing discussions about the remuneration of lecturers in the country.

Prof. Fasina futher expressed his support for the Federal Government’s decision to exempt public universities from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS).

This, according to him will grant universities more autonomy, and allow them to manage their affairs independently.

Highlighting the benefits of this decision, he mentioned the ability to decide on the proper management of the university system and the opportunity to supplement government allocations with Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

The Vice Chancellor stressed the current inadequacy of lecturer salaries in Nigerian universities, citing the need for an increase.

According to him, the autonomy granted by exiting IPPIS will enable universities to efficiently handle matters such as recruitment without bureaucratic hindrances.

Prof. Fasina also pointed out the challenges associated with IPPIS, including delays in salary payments and bureaucratic bottlenecks. He commended the government’s decision to exempt universities from IPPIS, stating that it demonstrates a genuine intention and commitment to improving the education sector.
