The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has extended an offer of collaboration to the Nigeria Police, aiming to convert their vehicle fleet from traditional petrol and diesel engines to eco-friendly electric and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) alternatives.
The proposal was presented by Khalil Halilu, CEO of NASENI, during a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, in Abuja.
Highlighting the crucial role of vehicles in the police force’s mission to safeguard lives and property, Halilu outlined the objectives of the partnership. NASENI plans to not only upgrade and modernize police vehicle maintenance workshops nationwide but also to refurbish and reactivate out-of-service police vehicles. The collaboration aims to enhance the overall capacity of the Nigeria Police in responding promptly to security emergencies.
Under the terms of engagement, NASENI commits to mobilizing financing and technical expertise for the project. Halilu emphasized the agency’s understanding of its role in contributing to national security and supporting the Federal Government’s agenda. He emphasized the positive impact on security, job creation, and climate action through the transition to electric and CNG-powered vehicles.
The CEO pledged NASENI’s commitment to prioritize locally manufactured components and materials, fostering the growth of the local content effort. The revamped workshops are envisioned not only to contribute to the greening of police vehicles but also to generate surplus income, funding ongoing maintenance.
Inspector-General Egbetokun expressed excitement about the collaboration, recognizing its potential to positively impact police operations. He welcomed the offer to convert police vehicles to cleaner energy use and pledged the Nigeria Police’s support to NASENI in the realm of security, enabling the agency to fulfill its mandate effectively.
