In a tragic incident, a passenger boat carrying approximately 100 people capsized in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, resulting in numerous passengers missing.

Speaking with news men from the Disaster Officer in Borgu LGA, Mallam Musa disclosed that the boat capsized while en route from Dugga Mashaya in Dugga ward, Borgu LGA, to Wara market in Kebbi State.

As of the latest update, five bodies have been recovered, and search and rescue operations are ongoing.

The Director General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, confirmed the incident.

However, the exact number of casualties and survivors is yet to be determined.

The boat was reportedly loaded with passengers and goods, including grains and sugar cane. The disaster occurred around 2:05 pm on Monday, January 15, 2024.

It was gathered that local divers, NSEMA desk officers, and local government officials are actively engaged in the ongoing search and rescue efforts.

While the cause of the incident is officially under investigation, unconfirmed sources suggest that the capsizing may be attributed to waves in the river and overloading.

Niger State has unfortunately witnessed several boat mishaps in recent months, resulting in the loss of numerous lives.

In November 2023, another boat mishap in Shiroro LGA claimed at least 10 lives.
