A former Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau is currently serving as the leader of  a pressure group known as League of Northern Democrats (LND), to fight bad governance.

The group, consisting of 226 members involve prominent politicians and technocrats from Northern Nigeria.

Speaking with journalists, Shekarau emphasized the group’s commitment to advancing northern development through advocacy for good governance.

He insisted that action is needed from federal, state, and local governments in response to the protests against poor governance.

Shekarau highlighted the urgent need for reforms in the education sector and improvements in security, while also criticizing the current practice where project decisions are made unilaterally by the executive and stressed the necessity of establishing a body to hold them accountable.

Members include former governors, federal lawmakers, and influential businessmen. Alongside Shekarau and Ardo, notable members include Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, Sen. Ibrahim Ida, Kabir Tafida, Falalu Bello, Dr. Jamilu Isyaka Gwamna, Malam Salihu Lukman, Amb. Usman Sarki, Prof. Usman Yusuf, Muktari Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Aminu Shehu Shagari, and Murtala Shehu Yar’Adua.

In a communiqué released after the meeting, the LND resolved to prioritize political unity within the North and promote solidarity to strengthen its political influence in Nigeria.

The group also intends to engage former heads of state, vice presidents, and other regional leaders for support, adding that strategic working groups will be established to focus on political engagement, economic growth, security, and social cohesion.
