The Nigerian Army(NA) has sent stringent warning to the public against the spread of fake news.
The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu issued the warning on Tuesday on its official X handle.
He disclosed that the Nigerian Army is deeply concerned about individuals spreading false information as it is limiting their operations in Benue, Taraba, Plateau, and Kogi states.
The statement reads, “Without any ambivalence, the general public is to please note that the information conveyed in the said document is outright falsehood calculated to spread fake news in an effort to create undue tension and undermine the NA in the discharge of its constitutional roles.
“A close scrutiny of the fake press release with a fake Army letter head indicates a non-existent nomenclature in the Armed Forces of Nigerian (AFN), which is “THE NIGERIA DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS ABUJA SECTOR (1) OPERATION WHIRL STROKE,” he said.
He noted that the publication with a fake Army letter head was filled with grammatical and linguistic errors as opposed to the NA Press Statement, adding that the publication is misleading, inaccurate and should not be believed.
Nwachukwu who further stated that the NA is a strong protector of Nigeria’s independence, warned all unprincipled individuals and groups to desist from spreading fake news and join hands together as one to insecurity and all social vices raging the country.
