Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, on monday expressed condolences to the families affected by a boat accident in the Ibi Local Government Area, which tragically claimed over 20 lives.
NEWSTODAYNG gathered that the boat accident occurred around Anyiin in River Benue, claiming the lives of over 20 individuals, mostly fishermen.
The governor, through his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Emmanuel Bello, conveyed his deep concern, especially given the recent similar incident in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of the state.
Governor Kefas described the situation as worrisome and stated that the state government is actively working on strategies to prevent future occurrences of boat mishaps in Taraba. He extended prayers for the departed souls and assured that investigations are underway to unravel the circumstances behind the incident.
The governor emphasized the heartbreaking nature of the recent boat incident, pledging to personally visit affected areas and engage with local stakeholders in the waterways transport sector to ensure the safety of water transport for passengers. Kefas outlined measures in place, including phasing out old boats and enforcing the compulsory use of life jackets to enhance safety.
The Chairman of Taraba State Water Transportation, Alhaji Jidda Suleiman, disclosed that the incident happened during a fish expedition between Chinkai of Benue and the Anyeci area of Wukari local government area of Taraba State.
Suleiman appealed for assistance from both the state and federal governments in providing life jackets to prevent similar tragedies.
