Two young men have been accidentally killed by a police officer in Omisanjana area of Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, following a road accident that occured in the area.
NEWSTODAYNG gathered that, some irate youths attempted to mob the driver involved and set the vehicle on fire when the police officers were called to stabilise the situation, but the youths remained hostile.
Following efforts to disperse the crowd, an accidental discharge from one officer’s gun struck two of the youths who died en route to Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
The Ekiti State Police Command spokesperson, DSP Sunday Abutu, stated that a thorough investigation has begun as the police initially deployed to State Traffic Section is to maintain order and ensure the safety of the victims. Also, the officer responsible has been disarmed, arrested, and detained, and will face disciplinary action.
The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, CP Akinwale Kunle Adeniran, has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them that a thorough investigation is underway and justice will be served.
