Hon. Ikenga Ugochinyere, a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), has condemned Senate President Godswill Akpabio for allegedly launching a political attack on Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State during a funeral ceremony.

The incident occurred during the burial of the late Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank Holdings, Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba, and their first son, Chizzy.

Governor Fubara, in his tribute, questioned the motives behind political struggles, asking, “What’s all these struggles about?”

In response, Akpabio recounted his own political experiences, suggesting that the struggle for power is justified. His remarks drew criticism from Ugochinyere, who described them as “childish and unnecessary.”

Ugochinyere expressed dismay at Akpabio’s decision to politicize a solemn occasion of mourning, emphasizing that Governor Fubara had never had any issues with Akpabio.

He highlighted Fubara’s support for Akpabio during the senator’s bid for the Senate presidency, citing it as an example of cooperation for the national interest.

The lawmaker cautioned Akpabio against meddling in opposition politics, citing previous instances where Akpabio allegedly interfered in political affairs outside his jurisdiction. Ugochinyere warned that such actions would not be tolerated by the opposition parties.

He urged the Senate president to be mindful of his remarks and refrain from politicizing sensitive events like funerals.

Ugochinyere emphasized that political recklessness has its limits, and the opposition parties would take a stand against such behaviour.
