Netherlands manager, Louis Van Gaal has confirmed he is stepping down as the manager, adding that he “does not care” who wins the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Argentina edged out the Netherlands on penalties after a hugely dramatic and bad-tempered quarter-final at Lusail Stadium.

Van Gaal, 71, was appointed Netherlands national team manager for a third time in August 2021. He first said last year that he intended to stand down after the Qatar World Cup.

“First and foremost I won’t be continuing,” he said in his post-match press conference following the 4-3 penalty shootout defeat. “I only did it for this period of time. This was my very last match of my third term as head coach.

“In that time I coached 20 matches and we didn’t lose a single one. I don’t know how many matches we won, but you can Google ‘Louis van Gaal, Dutch team’ and see the goal difference for yourself.”
